The Tempest
By William Shakespeare
Adapted by Debra Hecht
Directed by Jonathan David Martin with Jim Calder
Performed by the Touchstone Ensemble
Touchstone teams up with an old friend, Jim Calder, to collaborate on an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest: an irreverent take on Prospero and his magical island (3 actors, 10 characters, and 1 disembodied spirit). First seen in Florence, Italy, this new production traveled the Atlantic to receive its US premier in NYC last fall. Now, the Touchstone ensemble takes on this imaginative and physically inspired ninety-minute rendition of Shakespeare's fantastical island tale! Celebrate the art of theatre with this feat of dramatic wonderment for the whole family.

Universes' Live from the Edge
Touchstone Theatre, in partnership with Sandglass Theater of
Putney, Vermont, and HartBeat Theatre of Hartford,
Connecticut, presents a visiting guest artist. Each artist
travels to the three theaters on a east-coast tour
performing their work and immersing themselves in the
distinct communities. This unique touring circuit is
supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment
for the Arts.
This year's visiting guest ensemble is Universes. A company that grew out of a band of New York poets who got bored with traditional poetry readings and chose instead to work as an ensemble, blending poetry, song and movement. Live from the Edge showcases Universes’ special brand of fusion theater tracking their evolution of poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel.
Reserve your tickets early for this unique performance event that turns the poem into a communal act!

As a compliment to our Main Stage Season, Touchstone's offers these five special events.

Walden
Created by Bill George
Performed by Bill George and Linda Ganus(flutist)
This full-length evening work features Henry David Thoreau’s text mounted in a frame of gestural simplicity and direct address. It is the story of an innocent soul, troubled by his times, who retreats to the woods to understand the full meaning and test the validity of the many assumptions about living that society takes for granted. While there he has many adventures and natural encounters and is, in one sense, adopted by the “spirits” of Nature. Learning through his encounter with a mischievous and elusive loon, Thoreau slowly comes to understand the ultimate frustration and joy of his quest.
